The Paris Retreat is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains next to the Shenandoah Valley in the very northern section of Fauquier County. The Appalachian Trail and Sky Meadows Stat Park are nearby, and the Shenandoah River is about 7 miles away. Paris is 1 hour or sixty-two miles from Washington, D.C. Gap Run Road and is just a breath away from the historic Ashby Inn circa 1782. The view from the front encompasses the fields of a slopping valley and off to the distance hills and ridges of the mountains of Virginia's horse and hunt country.
The peak of the Blue Ridge Mountains which overlooks the valley and Paris is called Ashby Gap and is accessed by U.S. Routes 17 and 50.
The view looking east from Ashby Gap has been designated a “Scenic Easement” and is protected from development. Farms dot the valley floor with neighboring Ovoka Farm being of special note as producers of Wagyu cattle.
So precious is this spot with its natural beauty that in 2004 it was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places identified as Crooked Run Valley Rural Historic District comprised of 18,000 acres at the center of the Mosby Heritage District. Paris and its surrounds were part of a 3,000-acre land grant given to Robert ‘King’ Carter in 1731. In 1769 this region was surveyed by George Washington along with some of its mid-18th c. structures (still extant). The Paris Historic District contains structures form the 1780s, but it wasn’t until 1810 that the village was established as an unincorporated community.
